Power
With a wide portfolio of energy supplies, access to the flexibility of BC Hydro’s electric system, our highly skilled staff, significant transmission positions, exceptional scheduling capabilities and sophisticated IT systems, we have been able to grow our market from west to east, and access and reliably deliver power where others can’t.
What We Do
- Buy significant amounts of power from a wide array of energy resources and suppliers across North America, including investor-owned and municipal utilities, energy marketers, power pools, independent system operators and industrial customers
- Sell power across North America to investor-owned and municipal utilities, energy marketers, power pools, independent system operators and industrial customers, among others
- As well as being active in a variety of compliance based environmental markets, we also market Green-e® Energy-certified wholesale REC and renewable electricity products to customers throughout North America
- Market the highly reliable “Canadian Entitlement” energy from the Columbia River Treaty. Powerex customers have used the Entitlement to augment their higher-capacity factor supplies and as a reserve for those hours when demands are higher than expected
- Actively participate in WECC, CAISO, AESO, PJM, NYISO, MISO, IESO, MRO, New England, New Brunswick and Québec, and growing in other regions as well
- Use our transmission positions across North America to deliver physical power to customers throughout our marketplace
- Structure customized energy products and services to meet customers’ specific needs
- Use industry-standard WSPP, EEI, and ISDA contracts, among others; we’ve also led the development of contracts for our renewable business
- Operate a real-time trade desk 24/7 to provide around-the-clock service
- In Alberta, we use custom contracts with pricing mechanisms like swaps and contracts for differences, and offer financial products such as call and put options. We are also an active participant in Alberta’s carbon offset market. And, like other electricity providers, we purchase transmission into and out of Alberta from the BC Hydro Transmission to reliably move power between the provinces
- Physical energy and capacity for differing terms (hours, days, months, years)
- Firm and non-firm deliveries
- Varying pricing mechanisms (index-based, fixed, index-based with collars and more)
- Ancillary services
- Wind firming and shaping
- Financial products such as call and put options, swaps/contracts for differences
- And more…
